Queen's Gambit
1.d4 d5 2.c4
An opening for White
The classic d4 opening (yes, the Netflix one).
The idea
White offers the c-pawn to pull Black's d-pawn away from the centre, then takes over the middle of the board. It's not a real sacrifice - White usually wins the pawn back.
The plan
Build a strong centre, develop pieces naturally, castle, and use the extra central space to press. The Queen's Gambit Declined (Black plays ...e6) is the most solid reply.
One tip for beginners
If you take the gambit pawn as Black (...dxc4), don't try to hold it - give it back and finish developing. Holding the pawn loses time.
What to watch out for
As White, don't get attached to the c4 pawn either; the point is central control, not the pawn.
