Sicilian Defense
1.e4 c5
A defense for Black
The most popular, most aggressive answer to 1.e4.
The idea
Black fights for the centre on White's terms by striking at d4 with a c-pawn instead of mirroring with ...e5. It leads to unbalanced, double-edged positions where Black plays for a win.
The plan
Black usually trades the c-pawn for White's d-pawn, gets a half-open c-file for the rooks, and counterattacks on the queenside while White attacks on the kingside.
One tip for beginners
The Sicilian is sharp and theory-heavy. If you're just starting, learn one simple system (like the Sicilian with an early ...e6 or ...d6) rather than memorising every variation.
What to watch out for
Falling behind in development chasing pawns. The Sicilian punishes slow play - get your king safe quickly.
