The idea

Black fianchettoes the bishop one move earlier than the normal Dragon, avoiding the ...d6 pawn and keeping more flexibility. The ...Nc6 knight is already developed, making the setup more compact.

The plan

Develop the bishop to g7 and castle early. Without ...d6, Black has a freer position and can play ...d5 in one move to fight for the centre. It avoids White's Yugoslav Attack entirely.

What to play next

After fianchettoing the bishop to g7, develop the knight to f6 and allow White's bishop to come to c4. Castle short immediately and plan for ...d5 to challenge White's centre. The bishop on g7 is a powerful piece pointing at White's queenside along the long diagonal.

One tip for beginners

The Accelerated Dragon is easier to learn than the regular Dragon because there's less critical theory. Play ...g6, ...Bg7, ...O-O, and then ...d5 when the moment is right.

What to watch out for

White can play the Maroczy Bind with 5.c4, gaining extra space. Don't fight it head-on; develop pieces patiently and wait for the right moment to break with ...d5.
