Most openings are close - the first move gives White a small edge. What actually wins games at the beginner level is playing the plan and not hanging pieces, far more than which opening you pick. How we score this.
The idea
Black immediately hits e4 with ...d5. After White takes, Black recaptures with the queen (and retreats it) or plays a gambit with ...Nf6. Very little theory to learn.
The plan
Develop quickly, get the light-squared bishop out, castle, and aim for a solid, easy-to-understand structure. A great beginner answer to 1.e4.
What to play next
After recapturing with the queen, move it to a5 when White's knight attacks it - this is the safest square. Develop the knight to f6 and the bishop to f5 before playing ...e6 to give the bishop a solid base. Your aim is to castle short quickly while keeping the queen safely away from the centre.

One tip for beginners
After 1.e4 d5 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3, retreat the queen to a5 or d6 and just develop. You'll get a sound, simple position every game.
What to watch out for
Don't leave the queen in the centre where knights and bishops chase it around - retreat it to safety after the recapture.
