What is Resign in chess?
To concede defeat before being checkmated - the most common way competitive games end.
Resigning is standard good sportsmanship when the position is clearly lost. Top players resign when checkmate is inevitable or when they are far behind in material with no compensation. Beginners often play on too long, but resigning too early can also be a mistake if the opponent might blunder.
